Part of the Human Race

Thanksgiving morning Nate and I ran in the Utah Human Race. This was such a fun event! There were 3600 runners and all the procedes went to the Utah Food Bank. We left the kids with Grandma Morrill since it was so cold, but hopefully they can run with us as they get older. We decided we definitely need to make this a yearly tradition!

The rest of Thanksgiving was great--we spent time with both of our families. I'm so blessed to have such a supportive, loving family, a wonderful husband, and a couple of great kids! Heavenly Father has certainly blessed us with not only a wonderful family, but the gospel, good health, and a peacful and comfortable life. I know we can never hope to deserve all this, but I do hope we can live and serve the best we can with what we've been given!

A Homeless Thanksgiving

We had our Capel family Thanksgiving party yesterday. My grandma asked us all to come for dinner; all we needed to bring was a can of food to donate to the food bank. We were surprised to find no table, chairs or furniture to sit on, just the floor. Then my grandma surprised us again and told us that for dinner each family could pick two cans of food to share and piece of fry bread each and that was it. Our little family got a can of green beans and a can of peaches; we sat on the floor and ate them out of the cans. The original intent was to do this all outside and have only a fire for cooking and warmth, but it was too snowy for that. Luckily we had eaten a big, late lunch that day so none of us were very hungry, but I couldn't help but think about what it would be like if this was our usual dinner. The experience certainly brought about a new sense of gratitude for the food we have to eat and the warm, comfortable home we live in. Thanks Grandma, for always trying to help us remember what is really important in life!

Year of the Homemade Costumes

Yeah, yeah, I realize its the second week of November and Halloween has long since come and gone, but I wanted to post photos of our homemade costumes for the kids. Nathan was in charge of Robbie's costume (he wanted to be a big green truck) and I made Ari's costume (she was a sunshine). Kudos to my smarty engineer husband for making working headlights and tailights, complete with an on/off switch, on Robbie's costume! Nate dressed up as a mechanic for the trunk-or-treat and then donned his traditional "death" costume on Halloween night (it really freaks out the trick-or-treaters) and I was a hippie named Sunshine at the trunk-or-treat and then became the mechanic on Halloween.

Robbie's Witches Brew

Today, after being upstairs for a few minutes, I discovered that Robbie had put together a concoction of raspberry vinaigrette dressing, salsa, mini marshmallows, and hand soap. Problem is, he brewed his little stew inside an already-carved pumpkin that was sitting on the kitchen counter. Of course the stuff came out the jack-o-lantern's face and all over the kitchen floor (if you come over and our house reeks of vinegar, tomatoes, and pear blossom, you know why). I think seeing the witches at Gardner Village made a little too much of an impact on him.

C'mon Everybody, Its Family Night!

I hope they still get this excited about Family Home Evening when they're teenagers.

A VERY Dangerous Can of Soup (and my first stitches)

No, I'm not flipping you off or trying to do the "live long and prosper" sign in this picture--I had to get stitches today (7 in all!) when I sliced my finger opening a very innocent looking can of Campbell's Cars Chicken Noodle Soup with one of those pop-top lids! These were my first stitches and I hope my last--not a fun experience. I hope I at least have a cool scar to show for it. So be careful when opening soup, everyone!
